Boy About Town - The Jam - Sound Affects (Vinyl, LP, Album)

The discography of the British band The Jam consists of 6 studio albums , 5 live albums , 14 compilation albums , 6 videos , 1 tribute album , 3 extended plays , 19 hit singles and 16 re-issues, as well as two B-Sides.

The band, who formed in , didn't debut until five years later in , when they released their debut studio album In the City , which entered at 20 place in the UK Albums Chart , and contained the title-track, " In the City ". Their most successful studio album was their final album The Gift in which took its place at Number 1 in the UK and at 82 in the US. The Jam were seen as the centre of mod revival culture during the s to the s, and the lead singer of the band, Paul Weller , was seen as The Modfather.

The band separated in , following ten years active, and five years of success. Dream Time. Dream Time demo. Dreams of Children. Liza Radley. Man In The Corner Shop. Monday alternate. Music for the Last Couple. Pop Art Poem. Pretty Green. Pretty Green demo. Rain demo. Scrape Away. Add Moods. Add Themes. For some reason, the recording of Paul Weller's "Boy About Town" on The Jam's Sound Affects album came out pretty flat, a reflection of Vic Coopersmith-Heaven's rather muddy production, and a mix that placed a bit too much prominence on Bruce Foxton's bass line.

It's only when the brass, provided by Dexy's Midnight Runners's horn section, blazes in that the number actually kicks into at least a low gear. The original, then, is barely worth a mention. However a far superior version was made available on flexi-disc through the band's fan club and, subsequently, Flexipop magazine.

There, Peter Wilson took a decidedly lackluster song. Before the "Boy About Town" dragged his way down the street; now he really does glide as Wilson wipes away the song's drab sound and replaces it with a snappy crispness. An object lesson in the importance of production and mixing, and how a sad sack of a song can be turned into a blaze of glory. AllMusic relies heavily on JavaScript. 4. Sound Affects is an audio snapshot of The Jam in transition, bridging from the hard driving New Wave Setting Sons to the Motown influenced The Gift. The original US vinyl release in began with Start!, which still seems to me like the perfect opening (though on this disk, it is returned to its spot on the UK release: at the end of "side 1")/5().

  7. Unhappy with the slicker approach of Setting Sons, the Jam got back to basics, using the direct, economic playing of All Mod Cons and "Going Underground," the simply brilliant single which preceded Sound Affects by a few months. Thematically, though, Paul Weller explored a more indirect path, leaving behind (for the most part) the story-song narratives in favor of more .
  8. referencing Sound Affects, LP, Album, PD, My copy includes a bonus single: "Going Underground"/"The dreams of Children." There is a sticker on the original shrink wrap that announces this item.
